A Worrying Weekend
This weekend can only be described as a worrying one for all
associated with Hamilton Accies. On Friday afternoon, Les Gray released a
statement which announced that the club had been the victim of an “elaborate
fraud”, resulting in the loss of a substantial amount of money. The fact that
the directors have had to inject funds into the club would also suggest that
the situation is particularly grave, with news reports speculating that the sum
lost by the club could reach seven figures, which would be extremely damaging
for a club of Hamilton’s size.
On the pitch, matters have not improved. Another defeat this
weekend against our biggest rivals certainly has not improved the mood amongst
the fans. Injuries still hamper manager Martin Canning’s team selection, but it
seems inexcusable to be constantly looking likely to concede from a set piece. Ioannis
Skondras opened the scoring against The ‘Well, with a great strike against the
run of play. The Accies had a strong penalty appeal when the score was still
1-0, as Greg Docherty looked to have been fouled by Motherwell’s Cedric Kipre. The
Steelmen levelled the score after 32 minutes when a Skondras mistake allowed
Rose to equalise. Motherwell scored the winner 5 minutes after half time, when
Peter Hartley headed home from a free kick. Hamilton pressed for an equaliser
but ultimately did not do enough to take anything from the game.
The Lanarkshire derby did see Antonio Rojano make his first
appearance for the club since signing several months ago. Many fans were
beginning to believe that the Argentinian striker was a myth following, however
it was good to see him out on the pitch to prove that he does actually exist!
It’s been a difficult few days for the club, on and off the
field, and whilst all are hopeful that the situation can be fixed as soon as
possible, you do get the feeling that only Hamilton Accies would ever be able
to get themselves into a mess like this!
